Team Effort Boosts Rates on Existing Equipment
When Waterville TG Inc. of Quebec, Canada, recently consulted Davis-Standard, LLC about optimizing processing rates on their Davis-Standard/Uth gear strainers, the response was immediate. Davis-Standard and Uth assembled a team of engineering specialists and spent a week at Waterville’s plant to address the company’s equipment issues. In a matter of days and with a few modifications, the team improved the output of strained material from approximately 350 kg per hour to over 650 kg per hour. Waterville nearly doubled rates with minimal cost, especially important in a down economy.
“The team made a thorough evaluation of our straining operation, assisted our staff with training, and made process and maintenance recommendations,” said Senior Executive Vice President, Denis Germain. “Davis-Standard’s leadership and the improved performance in terms of straining capacity have been significant.”
Waterville, an automotive sealing systems manufacturer and longtime Davis-Standard customer, purchased the gear strainers in 2000 and 2001 to improve quality and reduce scrap. The machines had performed well, but the present demand for strained compounds required increased outputs. After several trials at Waterville’s facility, the Davis-Standard/Uth team diagnosed the problems and offered solutions. Among those were software changes to expand operational limits, a change in operational parameters to increase throughput, and PLC programming adjustments for a more effective and efficient user interface. Davis-Standard and Uth also provided additional training to Waterville employees to help optimize operation.
“Davis-Standard does all you expect when diagnosing a problem and solving it.
They are wiling to come on site to see, measure and find a solution,” said Germain Bellemare, Senior Buyer, Equipment and Tooling. “We appreciate the easy access to experienced engineers and the rapid response.”
