Commodore and Davis-Standard Capitalize on Solid Business Relationship
As international markets for foam products continue to grow, Commodore and Davis-Standard, LLC have benefited from a strong business relationship that spans more than a decade. Commodore, a foam industry leader, purchases an average of six Davis-Standard PS foam extruders annually for its turnkey tandem foam systems exported around the world. Commodore is the only company of its kind to supply both foam-packaging products manufactured in-house and the expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam equipment technology to produce those products. Despite the down economy, Commodore has seen growth in markets such as India, Russia, the former Soviet Republics, Africa and South America.
“Davis-Standard has excellent equipment and there is worldwide recognition of the brand. Their extruders integrate extremely well with our foam equipment and our customers appreciate the reliability,” said Eivind Rynning, Director of Sales for Commodore. “Davis-Standard has been a cooperative partner in helping us sell foam systems into markets where foam technology is in high demand. Foam remains the least expensive material and we’re taking advantage of new opportunities.”
Since Commodore sells both foam systems and packaging solutions, the company prides itself on being a one-stop shop for the foam industry. On the foam technology side, Commodore supplies high-performance foam thermoforming sheet systems, complete with tooling and start-up assistance. They are the only major company to offer foam systems with a smaller footprint, beneficial in emerging markets and for customers requiring optimal flexibility. Commodore is the only company in the world offering equipment while at the same time manufacturing XPS foam products. On
the packaging solutions side, Commodore manufactures everything from school lunch trays to packaging for meat, poultry and fruit. They are able to handle special orders, high and low volumes, all with a quick delivery. Commodore is always committed to reducing waste and improving productivity, two cornerstones of Davis-Standard’s business philosophy.
Davis-Standard supplies Commodore with extruders in a variety of sizes. Within Davis-Standard’s foam technology offering, extruders are available in 2 1/2 to 6-inch (64 – 150mm) diameters with L/D ratios of 30:1 and higher. Hydrocarbon, atmospheric and dual gas metering systems are available for blowing agents. Dies are offered with remote die lip gap and choke adjustment; fully automated die lip gap and choke assembly with PLC control and recipe storage; and coextrusion technology. Davis-Standard can also provide complete systems and weight reduction solutions for solid sheet applications.
In addition to integrating Davis-Standard extruders as part of their foam systems’ offering, Commodore has a tandem/coextrusion R&D line with Davis-Standard extruders. This line has helped Commodore develop a series of proprietary products, mostly in absorbent foams and thin foams for labels. Commodore is also one of the few companies to have a facility available for foam pilot runs for companies interested in doing research. They just recently concluded a large R&D project with a major multinational company that makes personal care, safety, health and hygiene products.
“We have a niche in the international marketplace because of the depth of our product offering and the personalized service we offer,” said Rynning. “Davis-Standard has been an important part of our ability to service such a large customer base.”
